Could you look with "ls -l video" if the timestamp change when the
thumbnail is updated?

Other formats: Long time no watching movies, will update when I can
confirm this part.
Local partition: yes they are on local, reiserfs3
Modifying the video: not that I know of. Maybe something in the
background I don't expect to run? I'll do some checks, but let me know
if you want to know somet

Are those files stored on a local partition? The update is triggered
only if the timestamp changed. What filesystem do you use? Are you
modifing the video by some way?
