Binary package hint: gnome-utils
When selecting "Select area to grab" on the GUI part, or running "gnome-
screenshot -a" from the commandline, the selected area together with the
red shading is copied. This can be illustrated by running gnome-
screenshot and selecting an area on a white background on the screen,
like on a new empty file in gedit.

gnome-screenshot version: 2.3.2
This problem did not occur in Lucid.
