I can confirm this behaviour with xubuntu edgy using xfce.
With xbindkeys and a keybinding, or an xfce keybinding, with nautilus
--no-desktop and a particular directory as argument, nautilus sometime
opens 3 to severals additional windows, launched with the --desktop
command or no option and argum

I noticed that whan using gnome and xfce (not tested on others)
*set a keybinding for nautilus --no-desktop
*use it several times (let's say at least 30)
*sometimes, several instances of nautilus --desktop (from 3 to 8 usually)
