This is happening for me with autologin enabled for oneiric. I had to switch from lightdm to gdm because lightdm causes another bug that makes my system run at 100% CPU, but autologin with gdm has this problem. gdm-simple-slave[1220]: CRITICAL: gdm_session_direct_get_username: assertion `session

GDM has a bugfix by Robert Ancell: Description: Don't autologin if using ecryptfs - if you do then the home directory is empty as you need the password entered via PAM to decrypt it. This is not a perfect solution as the home directory may not be mounted yet. Author: Robert Ancell

I just set Auto login to on for my account and Oneiric did not start. My PC stopped on the Checking Battery State screen and gdm did not load. I searched and searched until I finally looked in syslog and saw the gdm_session_direct_get_username text. Through google I stumbled onto this thread. I

Hey rogz, You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade and re-test if this issue is still present there. If it's solved in the new
