I attached the .xsession-errors log of a session with the issue triggered.
(some lines are in french,sorry for that.)
gnome-settings-daemon is running.
When I've time I'll take a closer look at it.

most striking thing are the following two lines missing (which are
present when the issue occurs).

Happens to me to. I don't know how to investigate on this bug. Are there
any log files related to appearance/themes? Once in every two or three
weeks ubuntu falls back on a different theme.
