@burli: yes, it's true that you cannot add a bookmark if there are no
bookmarks already. You can only add the first bookmark if you change
into the folder that you want to bookmark (don't just select the folder,
you have to double-click on it to open it) and then choose the Bookmarks

Can't add bookmarks in current version of Precise, if the bookmark list

Ah! Now I understand, and I agree completely with your summary.
For me, it is not at all obvious that you have to actually be in the
folder you are trying to bookmark with the menu "Add Bookmark" option,
because normally I select a folder with the mouse and use dnd, so

That's not how "add bookmark" works, it doesn't add the selected
directory but the one you are in, that's an usability issue but
different from the bug you reported there, I think your title is
misleading, your bug is those bugs:

Also, look more closely at the video - I'm not trying to bookmark my
user dir, I'm trying to bookmark a folder called 'Untitled Folder',
which is not already in the bookmarks.

If your guest session has no Bookmark section, and a new user created
upon installation is created without a Bookmark section by default, so
it therefore impossible to add a bookmark via drag and drop for new
users. This is a pity but if there is a working menu option to do it,
it's not so serious.
Looking to your video it doesn't seem to be a bug, you don't have a
bookmark section so there is no place to dnd to and you try to bookmark
your user dir which is already listed and selected in the sidepane...

Rocko: no, the guest session didn't have a bookmark section so I didn't
try to dnd since there is nowhere to drag to, using the menu item "add
bookmark" or doing ctrl-D in a directory add the current directory

Here's a screen video showing me trying unsuccessfully to add a bookmark
via drag'n'drop and also via the bookmark menu.
Note that in the (other) user account where I already have a bookmarks
section and where adding bookmarks works, I get a horizontal black line
displayed in the left-hand section
@Sebastien: When you tried adding a bookmark in a guest session, did
nautilus already display a Bookmarks section on the left side? Where did
you drag the bookmark to? I only see 'Computer' and 'Network' sections
on the left. Dragging to the entries in 'Computer' just tries to move

I tried this on my VM, and no errors are printed when I try to add a
bookmark, either with drag and drop or via the menu. And the perms on
that file are:

I do get an error when starting nautilus, but it looks like an unrelated
samba issue:
Just tried on precise in a guest session, adding a bookmark with the
menu item or ctrl-d works without issue, deleting one in the bookmark
editor as well

Rocko, could you run nautilus --quit; nautilus and see if any error is
printed while trying to add or remove a bookmark? are you sure the
permissions on .gtk-bookmarks are correct?

@Sebastian: yes, #920691 might be the same issue. (Although it is
possible in Oneiric to actually create the first bookmark, it's just
unbelievably hard to do so.)
@Thibaut: I agree this bug is still present in Precise. In fact, I can't
even see a Bookmarks section in nautilus in Precise! So there

Yes, it's damn-near impossible to add the first bookmark. I reset my
user settings recently and it was enormous trouble adding the first
bookmark (I did it somehow by drag and drop as well).

users like me relied on them. You just take and break them ADDING

I think the problem can be reproduced as follows:
1. Open the home folder by clicking on the home icon in unity.
2. Try and drag'n'drop a folder to the sidebar.
If you tried to drag it anywhere but the bookmarks subsection of the
sidebar, the folder zooms back whence it came and isn't added to t
I've confirmed this bug after upgrading my host PC to Oneiric beta1 (I
first logged this bug after finding it in a newly-installed VM). The
existing bookmarks are in nautilus, but Add Bookmark (or drag'n'drop)
does nothing.
I am getting some .xsession-errors related to nautilus:
(nautilus:2841):
I also can't change the preferences 'show new folders in icon view'. It
is stuck in list view. I have checked that all the files in the home
folder are owned by my user.
Where does nautilus store its settings?
What more information can I provide?

Here is .xsession-errors. It doesn't change when I try to add a

I haven't created any other users yet - this is a fresh install +

Nope, it doesn't work for a brand new user either. I created an admin
user in case that makes any difference. It was fun creating the new user
because it made gnome-control-center crash, and then shortly afterwards
compiz crashed, but that is probably not relevant to this bug.
