It happened to me testing while carrying out a live usb persistent key
test on iso http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20120419.1
/precise-desktop-amd64.iso, after rebooting to verify the history of
firefox was kept (as it says in the test case) I found the two icons
overlapped.

That's not only live ISO testing. I've been having this very problem on
my (1024x600) netbook since Oneiric (or was it Natty ?) and it's still
there in Precise Beta :
- Right after login, I always have the 3 topmost icons on my desktop OK,
while the lower-end icons are all piled on top of each

I haven't been able to make this happen in a VM for testing. My best
guess was that it might be possible to trigger this by making sure that
those two .desktop files have identical mtimes, but that doesn't seem to
trigger it for me. Perhaps it's also resolution-dependent, though, as
