  With my Logitech USB headset, it should be possible to control the

  The only way I was able to control the speaker volume was by installing
  gnome-alsamixer, and controlling it from there.  It shouldn't be
  necessary to install another package, as most folks wouldn't even think
  of doing this, let alone know which package to install.  This should
  work out-of-the-box with the default volume control.
