Went ahead and removed the 'gtk2-engines-gtk-qt' and 'gtk-qt-engine' and
rebooted the system. The theme manager now works properly and has no
slowing of the programme or graphical distortion, at the moment it is
running as it should.

I had not tried to remove the package gtk-qt-engine, however... I just
tried and then received this error:-
sudo aptitude remove gtk-qt-engine

Please also find attached screenshot after trying selection The windows
degrade or fail to update as they should. This only happens when I try to
change themes and there is no other problem where this happens on my system in
Ubuntu.
