Well, it appears that wasn't what was causing GDM to hang. I did an
upgrade today and with the new gnome/gdm packages, gdm now functions
properly.
However, I still get the popup at login that gnome-power-manager is not
responding.

Hello Sebastien,
I have not had this problem recently, so cannot now remember all the
details of the problem. I remember that at the time I did need to
disconnect my ipod touch then reconnect it, and I think I also needed to
stop and restart Rhythmbox.
