I am thinking is some race condition here. It works reliably for me on
a fresh install of focal in a VM but on my desktop which has lots of
history and lots of packages installed I see the "not supported" error
sometimes.

Those patches wouldn't actually provide libappindicator support needed
for the gnome-shell extension. Those patches provided integration with
the messaging indicator and unity. Not the application indicator. I'd
really like to see a messaging indicator extension for gnome-shell,

I tried disabling the system extensions and logging in again, which did
work. I was able to reenable them all and gnome-shell was still working
again. Then of interest, launching an app that uses an appindicator
caused the shell to crash. I can reliably reproduce this, the
appindicator extension
@vanvugt actually my issue must have been different, I'm not using
mirror mode and it was happening to me without an external display (as
well as with). The workaround did work though.

out robert's gnome-shell upload didn't completely work without libgdm1

installed d-feet with apt, and within a couple minutes removed it with
apt. My laptop load spiked and stayed that way until I killed the

@thomas-voss: Sure, it should be robust, which is why I don't think
system-settings should be restarting the service. It's one thing to do
that at the end of the wizard upstart job, but we can't really do that
during runtime.
