"Thanks for your contribution to GNOME" reads too much like a "Thank you for not smoking" to me.
I usually read a CONTRIBUTING.md before I make any contributions so that I make sure I'm doing it right. The "thank you" makes it out like I'm already an active participant. Yes, I know that's petty.
