Yep, vuescan is the commercial software I was referring to in my
previous post, and yes, I tried the ugly workaround as soon as Hans
Schwimmbeck posted it, and it used to work, but it prevents from
updating too many packages due to a daisy chain of dependencies; I do
not even know if I could reinst
ulimit is settable system wide, so, at the end of /etc/security/limits.conf
add the lines:
*softnfile 16384
*hardnfile 32768
then reboot the system. That will set system wide limits for all tasks.

I believe the issue was due to the Polari IRC application. It ultimately
froze, while playing the *bell* sound on loop. After restarting the
laptop it works fine again, but the application my have issues running
for days at time.

Hence my confusion, llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 128 bits) with the radeon driver
is reported. And CAPE VERDE with the ati driver. Why would the wrong

the same model as David. Mine is an LG 27UD58-B. It's hooked up to a KVM

Actually sound does not work readily at boot (playing a tune in

brother.rules file as suggested, no joy. I have written to Brother
support, asking if they're planning the release of drivers libsane1
compliant; I've had an automatic reply suggesting to install the non

This fix comes from kernel side, so downgrade Mesa or not shou
Stefan, please open a new bug for yourself. There are many root causes
of such crashes and it would be wrong to assume you have the exact same
bug based on the short title of this bug.

panel and darker dock :).
