When an unknown album/artist is encountered, I entered the artist name
in the top artist box. I then tried to copy and pasted it into each of
the tracks and it won't copy the contents from the top artist field.

To advise, 4.14 kernel is not supported in Ubuntu. Also, it looks like
you have a PPA installed which may impact this issue.
To clarify, if you return to the Ubuntu kernel, and uninstall the PPA,
is this still reproducible?

reinstalled Ubuntu 16.04.3. Then I fully updated it.
