Here is what I know so far:
After rebooting this morning on Bionic (after receiving the gnome theme
updates, I think), upon reboot the CPU pegs and the greeter is never
displayed (there is a graphics system running, but I'm not sure what
it's doing). My num lock / caps lock k
I'm sorry for dumping the dmesg output into the thread. Here it is in a
file. But it's from after reboot. Does this have the error messages in
it from the previous session? Do I have to get a file from /var/log/ ?

My solution, sort of:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ubuntu-gnome-desktop
sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-control-center
Reboot, login into 'Gnome on xorg', Wacom now programmable with Settings
> Devices > Wacom Tablet
Log out, login on 'Ubuntu', now Ubuntu does it too :)

I encounter the same problem with the daily Xubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu MATE 18.04
of March 5, 2018. The connection via ethernet cable does not work unless I
disable the ipv6.
In practice I have to set the Method to Ignore in IPV6 Settings to navigate.

Actually it's not just inserting image that crashes the program.
Anything that opens the file system does that. I can't use the open,
save as functions because it crashes
