left, right and centre.
nautilus gives "Software caused connection abort" copying a file (but
pressing F5 to refresh shows that the copy seemingly worked).
gedit fails intermittently with the same error (possibly only on larger
18.04, for me, the native Calendar app synced in Online Accounts >

Yes, it seems to be a 'multiple users logged in' thing.
Use the sound in one user, then - at some seemingly random point that's
NOT while something is actually playing - discover that the sound system
is disabled. It's possible that both users have it not working, or one
to work and one not to.

I cannot observe the problem here. I tested in virtual machines, 18.04
and 19.10, version 70.0.1 from the Ubuntu archive in both, and played
with different values for the gain in your JSFiddle. When setting the
value to 0 there is no sound to be heard.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not seeing --force-dark-mode work on
the google-chrome deb either. So it doesn't seem to be a snap-specific
problem. Has this ever worked on linux? When searching for "--force-
dark-mode" I'm seeing lots of references to the feature on windows/mac,
not linux.
