One thing that is not clear from the description to me, you write that
control/output goes to HDMI but that playbacks continue through the speakers
... do you mean that the output displayed in setting
I'm on Manjaro, Huawei Matebook D (Ryzen version), but I had the same
problem and I solved it by changing my /etc/default/grub file in the
following way:
I changed this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="amd_iommu=on iommu=pt"
then I did:
sudo update-grub && sudo reboot

Thank you for your bug report, the issue is more likely to be in the
java stack than in gtk. Did you try to get a backtrace using gdb while
it's hanging? it might give a clue of what it's stuck.
Can you maybe come with a smaller testcase that trigger the issue and
that you could share?

If the pulseaudio tools works fine so it might be a gnome-control-center
issue

There is a /usr/local installation which is taking over the Ubuntu one
and probably incompatible. Those are usually the result of a manual
build/make install. I
