I'm encountering this about once/day on my Lenovo X1 carbon laptop with
kernel 5.3.0-24-generic.
I'm a developer, but I don't know much beyond that background about how
to fix this. I just know that I'm kind of quickly losing my mind, and
that it wasn't happening when I first started using the lap

Verified fixed in BlueZ 5.52 (or 5.51), so the fix is in Ubuntu 20.04.
I'm not sure what commit(s) in BlueZ did the trick but if you are using

answer is just that A2DP does not support a mic. So this isn't a
software bug and it probably should not stay open.
We do however understand people would like better automatic switching to

Progress, and some bad news... Testing with Sony WH-1000XM3 I can
reproduce the bug easily. But it's not a recent regression if at all.
The same bug occurs in an original Ubuntu 18.04 install without any
updates.
I'm tempted to clarify that Sony WH-1000XM3 is our main test case here.
