I tried and can confirm the bug is still present with the below version:

One standard way to deal with this kind of thing is to open the file -
then immediately unlink the file. The file handle can continue to be
used to read / write the file.
The file is removed from the directory list (so is no longer visible).
It is removed completely when the file handle is closed

This very much sounds like you were triggering the paste action from clipit
(probably using a keyboard shortcut) without realizing it.

How do you test?
- Which version of WSL you are using?
- What is the output of `echo $DISPLAY` if you open a terminal from the link
created by wslu?
- What is the content of `/etc/resolv.conf`?

Mouse cursor works when frozen.
Actually, it looks like psensor does hang until the system starts to come back.
It does show a spike (of unknown amplitude) in CPU usage (tenfold) and CPU
temperature and there is an audible increase in fan speed. Top/gnome-terminal
also freezes.
