I did this test twice now, using Chromium 98.0.4758.102 snap, firstly
with a VM and then with the host system.
Gladly, everything worked correctly: no system crash on the host and the
file was uploaded successfully to the GCP instance (sha256 matched).

hours I notice that when logging in, both of my external monitors just

I found the issue, I had this installed from the Dell repo for 20.04 LTS:
libfprint-2-tod1-goodix
more specifically:
libfprint-2-tod1-goodix_0.0.6-0ubuntu1_somerville1_amd64.deb
This worked great with 20.04 and the fprintd version in there, but apparently
it breaks the current version.

It turns out that I may have misunderstood - the same thing happens for
me when telling MATE Tweak that I want to use Compiz rather than Marco
as my window manager.
The switch to Compiz certainly happens (I am reminded of why I stopped
using it..) and it is sticky between reboots.
