It happens in ArchLinux as well, so I am sure it has nothing to do with the 
Ubuntu version...

  The gnome-suduko program used to have an option to generate additional
  puzzles.  But in 10.10 it is missing.  If  you run it from the command
  line instead of the GUI, you'll see an error message like the
  following:
