I'm also affected with this bug, but after closing evolution with xkill,
it restored the message including the smiley and all was ok.

Bug description:
  I'm using evolution under 12.04.

  after inserting a smiley/icon from the smiley-dropdownlist, the smiley
  gets inserted into the text but after this, mouse and keyboard are
  blocked - but only in evolution - works still in rest of the system.
  So evolution has to be killed manually.

  not very severe but annoying
