If the audio is not distorted in Totem, then it's a Banshee issue. If the audio
is distorted in Totem but not mplayer, then it's a gstreamer issue. Otherwise,

I think it's most likely a focus-prevention issue in Compiz. Try
lowering it using CompizConfig Settings Manager, under General Options →
Focus & Raise Behaviour → Focus Prevention Level.

If you're using Unity with the global menu, you won't be able to
assign/change the keyboard shortcuts for any of the menu items. However,
if you're not using the global menu, this is changeable as long as the
/desktop/gnom
