To add to this, the zoom factor is doubled (halved?). That is, when the
zoom is set to 100% it's actually displaying the image at 200%
resolution. To see the image at it's correct size the zoom must be set
to 50%.

I received some updates today including gnome-shell, gnome-common and
mutter and this issue is now resolved. Oddly enough gnome-screenshots
was not updated and I still have the same version as before. For the
record here are the packages that were updated:

I just noticed that the size of the screenshot affects how much of the
image is missing/corrupted. The smaller the screenshot the less gray
area that shows up and if the screenshot is small enough NO corruption
is present.

I am having the same issue in an up to date (as of today) copy of Ubuntu
