On a hunch I installed libreoffice-base and magicly everything is fine
and dandy.
It would be pretty cool if libre office writer prompted that instllation of
'base' is nessisary rather than crash and burn. :(

Something else that I just noticed;
I had two documents open over the past night, I created both about the
same time around 11pm according to the file's modified timestamp. One
had about 3 pages of text, the other had three words.

my laptop suspended with whatever I was working on open. The next day I
always have to close all of my documents and reopen them to make Writer
usable again.
