This is a false alarm, at least partly. If username is defined like
sftp://u...@some.server.org, everything works OK. It is likely that in
the live USB test case the server I use checks username from LDAP. As I
did not specify user name and the default "ubuntu" was used, connection
got denied. On a
Public bug reported:
When trying to connect a server using ssh:// or sftp:// no user/password
information is asked and I get error saying "Access Denied".
Expected behaviour: user/password would be asked.
I tested also with 20.04 live USB - same behaviour.

I tested my hypothesis above. I made a Live USB stick with space to save
settings and updates. I used ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso. After
changing languge settings to finnish and installing all localization
files I opened Firefox for the first time. Paper size in firefox was

The bug still exists in Thunderbird (not sure about Firefox). Every time
Thunderbird is updated the paper size is changed to letter even if the
user uses locale for which the right size is A4.

The fix does not work as per now.
My suggestion is: erase all countries 1) using letter size paper and/or
2) using imperial measurements instead of metric.
I'm fed up with the "bliss" of not knowing anything about life outside
one's own country.

I did get rid of the error when I changed the remote backup directory.
This however means several days of uploading while doing the first

I would really love to see this fixed. This is again a good example how
really important things are just broken. When a fresh Linux user bumps
into things like this, he/she is very likely to go the proprietary way.
A year and a half and no solution. This is sad.

Hope it works for you!

As far as I understand this means that the windows manager of Unity is
broken. Or is it Compiz? All the same - this should be fixed.

As Unity 2D has been removed from 12.10 there is a need for another
workaround. I found out that the flash player settings dialog works in
Gnome classic (No effects) -session in 12.10 64 bit Ubuntu.
Does this not hint that the problem is in 3d acceleration?

I confirm this on 32-bit version and Oneiric. To me the freeze does not
