Followup to my #23, I traced:
strace -e open brasero 2>&1 | grep libdvdcss
and found that I had a copy of libdvdcss.so in /usr/local/lib
After removing this, it finds the library in /usr/lib, and I no longer
experience this problem.

I'm seeing the same problem in ubuntu 14.04.
my (hopefully temporary) solution is to run brasero from the commandline
like so:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libdvdcss.so.2.1.0 brasero

Copy a range of cells from Calc, paste into Writer, both apps crash.
Cursory testing shows that sometime this works, but sometimes the apps crash.
Maybe depends on whether cells have formulas? See upstream bug, which has been
fixed.

I have changed employers, and no longer have access to the IMAP server
containing messages that definitely caused the crash.
