Of course, the 43 seconds are the default behavior. If you disable the "Show thumbnails" option in nautilus preferences, the time goes down to 3 seconds. It seems clear what is causing the problem. Maybe adding an option to disable thumbnails when the folder is bigger than X files would solve it?
