eog 3.12.2-0ubuntu2, with both default Ambiance GTK theme and with
Radiance GTK theme. Also here, the bug is not present with High Contrast
GTK theme.

"work around" the (for me) currently unusable default compose window,

Aesthetically, to my eyes both Richard's and Josiah's proposals look
