Thanks! After removing the workspace-grid extension I was able to log in
using the Gnome (Ubuntu) desktop again.
I guess the bug is in this extension then, and not in gnome-shell as
such, but isn't it bad for gnome-shell that an extension can cause a
problem so severe that you can not even log in

Today I hit the same problem as in bug #1722454, MemoryError in
manifest.py. I am on Ubuntu 17.10 with duplicity 0.7.12-1ubuntu1. I also
