I tried the preinstalled desktop image of Ubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster)
Beta last night. It has the same problem, as expected, but it was a bit
tricky to fix it directly on the disk image.
There are two files called 'cmdline.txt', one in each of the disk's two
partitions:
1. system-boot/cmdline.

Thank you for following up! Unfortunately, I pulled out the NVIDIA
Quadro FX 550 and bought a cheap AMD Radeon HD 5450 graphics adapter a
very long time ago now. I'm using the ATI open-source driver, and
haven't had the problem since. I gave away the NVIDIA adapter.
