I had the same problem, but this bug now seems to be resolved at least
for me. Totem now plays H.265 videos out-of-the-box without crashing.

I can reproduce this bug by opening and closing videos with Totem. Takes
less than 20 videos and then I am back to a terminal for about 15
seconds, until the display manager starts up and I have to log back in
again.

The brightness can be changed through commands, however the brightness
keys fn+f6 (brighter) and fn+f5 (dimmer) are not detected by
acpi_listen, thus the hotkey functions do not activate.
