Having the same issue, with 2 google accounts in empathy.

One account is a google apps for domains, one is a standard @gmail.com.

Only differences with OP is that im on x86_64 and LANG=en_US.UTF-8.

  authentication fails

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Every time i open my computer and try to connect Empathy, i have an
  authentication error, systematically with Google Chat ... And this
  problem is true on my 2 computers that have Empathy.

  I have to go to online accounts, deactivate and then reactivate Google
  every time ...
