Doing the upgrade to E21 on the original system finally fixed the
problem there...

I was able to install E17 on another amd64 system with the nvidia driver
install. It has a similar failure. The screen was blank, but on this
system the mouse cursor was displayed, and the keyboard worked.
I finally stumbled across the setup instructions at:

I helped my friend Roger setup five systems running ubuntu with boinc
running in the background for the Einstein@home project. One has a AMD
Phenom 9950 CPU, and the others have AMD FX-8320E, FX-8150, FX-8350, and
FX-8370 CPUs. All have the X64 version of ubuntu installed. I
