My application subclasses Gtk::Application, and my constructor calls
Glib::set_application_name ( Test App Menu ). I expected the app menu
to be titled Test App Menu, which is what happens when using the Gnome
desktop.
Not a bug. When there is a valid .desktop file accompanying the
application, it works just fine.

Please delete this bug report. I discovered an obsolete rhythmbox-client
was being executed due to a change in my PATH variable. A --version
command in rhythmbox-client might have made this easier to find.

rhythmbox 3.0.2
Rhythmbox is running and responds to the play button in its window, but
doesn't respond to rhythmbox-client requests. Just upgraded to 14.04.
This was working prior to the upgrade (32-bit 12.04LTS, 64-bit 13.04).
