Same problem, in my case with a USB-attached Canon Canoscan N650U (an
ancient, well supported scanner, that was working just fine on
12.04LTS).
$ lsusb

I've switched my production machine to Mint 14.1 (a deriviative of
Ubuntu 12.10) with their Cinnamon desktop environment, and the problem
has gone away. I'll try to reproduce on Quantal on my test machine, and
report back. It may be that the problem has been fixed somewhere between
Oneric and
