The missing launcher message are ok and expected if those packages are

That looks like video corruption, and it is possible that gnome-classic
has some of the animations disabled compared to gnome-shell, but I can't
think of any other difference.

Works for me. I couldn't seem to get apt to fetch the new package from
utopic-proposed, but I downloaded the new deb from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/utopic/amd64/deja-dup/32.0-0ubuntu1.1 and
used dpkg -i to install.
I can now open deja-dup from the settings panel. Thanks for the fix!

Now that we have an experimental GNOME wayland session in vivid, it
would be somewhat useful for apport to detect if a bug report is from a
wayland session. It probably makes sense for this to be global since
other projects will eventually offer wayland sessions as well. Not
gnome-settings-daemon requires idle monitors which are provided by
mutter, for the cursor plugin to work correctly. I think you probably
want to use unity-settings-daemon here, it has its own idle monitor.
