I had a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install and was effected by this bug. Running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure network-manager-pptp-gnome
Solved the problem.

enabled, but it does
I installed lxdm and that fixed it for me on a Lubuntu machine

Forgot to say : found that behaviour of ff after using kubuntu 14.04
with homedir from kubuntu 12.04.
My apt-sources (please ask for other needed information) :

deb-src http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty main restricted

Upgraded from Lucid to 12.04.1
System reboots ok and shows login screen.
On password confirmation, system tries to login to gnome, but only returns
message Failed to load session ubuntu with only option to log out.
SSH login works fine.
VNC login returns the error message.
