Thanks for your prompt answer! I narrowed things down a bit. As I am using i3 wayland is not an option. I tried a live ubuntu 20.04 and could still reproduce the behaviour described. I went on to enable wayland in live session but failed eventually: XDG_SESSION_TYPE still yielded `x11` but in the

To make thing even weirder, one time the external monitor went to sleep while the system was waiting for cryptfs passphrase input and the situation occured already in login screen: Could move the mouse into the black screen with login window following there, and back. I tried to restart lightdm.

After connecting via “real” DP-cable the situation is slightly different. The external monitor now is showing a picture when booting which was not the case while connected via HDMI. `xrandr` now shows connection via DP-2. When going to standby after waking up monitor settings are changed to “sing
