Just did an upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 on 17 October 2013. "Light Display Manager" was offered as a login option, but I could still log into my other user accounts and get work done. The minimum-uid line in my /etc/lightdm/users.conf file was set to 500, and the uid of the "lightdm" user was properly set as less than 500. My /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file had no special instructions to make that user appear on the login screen. Adding "lightdm" to the "hidden-users" line in my /etc/lightdm/users.conf file corrected the problem for now.
