Same problem here with HP LaserJet 4350 (I know it's a different printer but
this is the most related post I've found and it solved my problem).
I've edited the ppd and changed:
*DefaultHPOption_Duplexer: False
into
*DefaultHPOption_Duplexer: True

Title:
duplex printing no longer works for OfficeJetPro 8500 with HPLIP >
  3.9.6b

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Incomplete
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Since I've installed HPLIP v3.9.6b, duplux printing no longer works
with my OfficeJetPro 8500. To be more precise, the duplex option in
the print dialog only shows the one side option, and in any
  application (firefox, openoffice)

It doesn't work either with version 3.9.8.

  Config:
  - ubuntu 8.04
  - HP OfficeJetPro 8500 (909a)
  - network-connected

Duplex printing used to work with HPLIP 3.9.2.

  Uninstalling (http://hplipopensource.com/node/188) and re-installing
  HPLIP 3.9.2 is workaround.

  Is this a regression ?
