I have exactly the same problem. I have a Dell XPS m1330 with 4gb Ram, and 2ghz dual core and gwibber brings it to a crawl when it update twitter. It also scrolls terribly slow within the gwibber window.

I cannot even scroll because the app grays out, like crashing out, but then it comes back... That I think is a bug, not sure, but twitter in the browser or facebook works 1000 times better than this. So I had to switch to the browser.
