I just noticed that starting gimp in a terminal with the switch
"--stack-trace-mode=always" prevents the crash. "save as" saves and gimp
stays on. So the command I use is: "gimp --stack-trace-mode=always &".

Can you please add a stacktrace to your report?
To do this, launch GIMP from the command line, with the flag --stack-
trace-mode=yes. Now when GIMP crashes, you'll see a question in the
terminal asking you if you want to print a stack trace. Print it and
attach it to your bug report.
