seems like an xorg, drivers or kernel issue ... could you add your
Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old syslog dmesg logs after getting the issue?

Thank you for your bug report, the issue is likely to be a graphic
driver or a session one though rather than lightdm, the return to login
screen after entering password is usually a sign that the user session
exits

Thanks Sebastien for the reply, I was begining to think I was all alone
here.
Well as you surmised, I was wrong.
The inability to login through the graphical desktop cropped up again,
running GDM, on battery power.
Guess I never paid attention to whether my laptop was running on battery
or not
Well things got increasingly weird. Desktop GUI would stop functioning
if laptop was disconnected from A/C. Then just an hour ago I got stuck
in an endless loop of Lightdm greeter - login screen would appear, I'd
login (ubuntu, ubuntu 2d, recovery console, did not matter) and screen
would go
When I can successfully login my lightdm lod reads:

If I wait for desktop login but drop to command prompt (ctl-alt-F1) I
can login. If I run Lightdm from command [sudo lightdm] prompt the
graphical desktop flashes on screen momentarily, then get a screen with
a bunch of text that
