Thanks Sebastien for the reply, I was begining to think I was all alone here. Well as you surmised, I was wrong. The inability to login through the graphical desktop cropped up again, running GDM, on battery power. Guess I never paid attention to whether my laptop was running on battery or not

Well things got increasingly weird. Desktop GUI would stop functioning if laptop was disconnected from A/C. Then just an hour ago I got stuck in an endless loop of Lightdm greeter - login screen would appear, I'd login (ubuntu, ubuntu 2d, recovery console, did not matter) and screen would go

May be the same issue as this previouisly reported bug: Bug #824140 If I wait for desktop login but drop to command prompt (ctl-alt-F1) I can login. If I run Lightdm from command [sudo lightdm] prompt the graphical desktop flashes on screen momentarily, then get a screen with a bunch of text that
