Looks like the bug is related to FB modesetting done by linux-
image-3.5.0-18-generic kernel. I rebooted into 3.2.0-30-generic and the
resolution became correct.
Reassign the bug the the linux-image kernel package please.

Looking at the diff between the two files I see that the first Modeline of
ubuntu 12.10 is somewhat different from ubuntu 12.04 detected:
ubuntu12.10: (II) intel(0): Modeline "1680x1050"x59.9 119.00 1680 1728 1760
1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync (64.7 kHz eP)
