I'm also affected.
When I click anywhere in GIMP while my touchpad is disabled and I'm back to
login screen.

Nils Ole Tippenhauer (#6) post saved me, my 12.10 Ubuntu was crashing
unpredictably, after adding that repository and update no crash in
weeks!

Thanks Hakan for this confirmation.
@all:
I posted a related bug at X.org's bugtracker. Peter Hutterer confirmed that
this bug was most likely resolved in the git-version of X.org in late 2012. The
original bug report was:

Hi,
I'm running ubuntu 12.10 32bit with an Acer Aspire (Intel® Core™
i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz × 4, Intel® Ivybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2)
I can confirm that if you try to use inkscape with disabled touchpad the
whole Xorg crashes.
It's a bad bug. How may I help?

Is it somehow possible to increase the bug heat somehow? This is a
terrible bug. In my opinion, it is THE worst case bug that can happen.
Open a SVG, click in Inkscape and all crashes.
In fact, this week I lost work due to this bug. I wanted to quickly
change something small in an SVG with
I can also confirm in my Asus Zenbook UX31A that Inkscape crashes while
using external mouse, but only if I have disabled touchpad through
keyboard (fn+F9)

Hi, I'm not that techie as you are. But try hard.
I experienced the same crash when clicking on working area in Inkscape.
After I read what you had reported about a possible connection between
the touchpad and this bug, I disabled the touchpad-indicator that
freezes my touchpad. Then I started
I experience the same problem if I disable the touchpad using Xinput
using this script:
#!/bin/sh
for device in 'PS/2 Mouse' 'ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse' 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS
GlidePoint'; do
/usr/bin/xinput set-prop $device 'Device Enabled' 0
done
It's then enough to launch Inkscape and click on
I am experiencing this bug on a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 420. I have the
touchpad disabled via the Xubuntu settings manager, and I have not
upgraded X using the ppa, so my machine is in the right state for
debugging. I experience the same problem as everyone else: X crashes
immediately when I click
I investigated my setup a bit more for reference wrt touchpad:
Afaik, the lenovo X1 carbon does not have a hardware key to disable the
touchpad, I used the Xubuntu settings manager to disable the touchpad. Thus, I
only had the touchpad disabled in software when experiencing the bug. As I
cannot
It appears also on Xubuntu 12.10, 32-bit, Dell Inspiron 7520.
Several days worked properly and, maybe after kind of automatic update,
failed.

Possibly one of the actual triggers is still the same as what is described in
this comment of (older) bug #1021517 (crash depends on the fn-f8 combo to
activate/disable the touchpad):
I might be related, but as far a I remember I did not have problems with gimp.
I have the touchpad disabled permanently (do not remember how exactly) and only
use trackpoint.
Is everyone affected here using a laptop? Nicolas, Johannes, Tomasz and
me are apparently. Maybe this reflects
I'm affected as well, using a Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook with Mint 14
MATE. After reading ~suv's comment and the linked one, I had a hunch
what might be causing the crash on my system: I'm running touchpad-
indicator to disable my touchpad while a mouse is attached. The crash
does indeed not
I have the same problem with 12.10 fresh installation on my Thinkpad
X220. It is not nvidia specific as I am on an Intel GPU.

Thanks to Nils (#6). edgers did the trick. I hope the fix will flow
downstream soon. I am a bit nervous using this ppa :-/

Copypaste from wrong, old bug report (2012-12-03): last week (28th
November) I was using inkscape without problems. I tried to downgrade
all ubuntu packages that were upgraded last week, but without success.
Now it does not work at all. My workaround is to use inkscape through
VNC.
Moreover, it
My workaround with special PPAs works now!
After the last round of upgrades to the special PPAs of inkscape and
xorg, the problem seems to have disappeared - I can click into workspace
without crashing Inkscape
