im trying the kernel you told me but my resolution is still 1024x768

i have also upgraded
oh, wait !
i have been able to change from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 with no problems! :)
next step is, to boot directly into 1280x1024 :D

There have been a few bugs in 3.8 recently, it looks like some of those
might be affecting you.
Can you try the v3.9-rc3 mainline kernel?
