Timo, yes I had the GNOME3 PPA installed but after ppa-purging it and
even rebooting, the problem remained. This affects both gdm (which I
prefer to use) and lightdm with the unity greeter.

Jeremy, are you using logind now? If so, can you please re-test with the
very latest systemd and udev (175-0ubuntu24) from raring, as the latter
fixes ACLs on hotplugged devices?

So it appears you lost rw permissions on /dev/dri/card0. That is
primarily an issue with the login/session manager (as it should be
setting up the permissions when you login). If you are a member of the
video group, you can fixup the issue with 'sudo chgrp video
/dev/dri/card0 ; sudo chmod g+rw /de
