Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with the
nvidia-graphics-drivers package. You made this bug report in 2013 and there
have been several versions of Ubuntu since then.
Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If
I have experienced the same issue. Logging in remotely still works, and
will show Xorg at 100% CPU utilization. It seems to be related to the
nvidia driver.
My card: VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF106GL [Quadro
2000] (rev a1)

This is still an issue for me. It just happened again.
It was impossible to do a smooth restart in any way. I was forced to
login from another machine and 'sudo shutdown -r now'. I first tried
'sudo restart lightdm'. This just blacked the screen.
I am requesting help with this bug, please.
