At some point, I stopped seeing the problem on my laptop. I'm afraid I
have no idea what package update (or other change) may have brought
about the resolution in the interim.

John Clemens, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/da
this bug affects me as well on my Lenovo Ideapad. The workaround
suggested works, also logging out and back in helps too.
